In his first comments since the Wagner leader's passing, Vladimir Putin lauded Yevgeny Prigozhin as a "talented businessman" but criticized him for making "serious mistakes."
"I have known Prigozhin since the early 1990s. He had a challenging life and made terrible mistakes. But he did get results—both for himself and when I asked him, according to Putin—in a broadcast speech.
The plane disaster, which happened on Wednesday night in the Tver region northwest of Moscow, was attended by the Russian president, who sent his sympathies to the surviving passengers. Ten persons died in all, including three crew members and six passengers.
The Wagner members murdered in the incident, according to Putin, "significantly contributed" to the struggle against the neo-Nazi dictatorship in Ukraine.
Putin said they would have to wait for the results of an official inquiry before commenting on the cause of the incident.
However, according to US sources, preliminary evidence indicates that Prigozhin was murdered and that a bomb may have detonated aboard the flight.
Putin's comments on the plane disaster in full
Yevgeny Prigozhin was killed in a plane crash, and Vladimir Putin finally spoke out about it. He said the following during a televised speech:
Regarding the aviation catastrophe, I want to start by sending the families of every victim my deepest sympathies. It is tragic every time.
We remember this, we know this, and we won't forget it if employees of the Wagner company were present, which the preliminary facts suggest they were. These individuals significantly contributed to our shared effort to resist the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine.
Since the early 1990s, I had known Prigozhin for a very long time. Due to his unfortunate circumstances, he had a horrible life and made terrible decisions. He worked hard to achieve the outcomes he required for himself, and when I questioned him about it,
He was a gifted individual and a gifted businessman who worked successfully both domestically and overseas, particularly in Africa. He worked with oil, gas, precious metals, and gemstones there.
I believe he just got back from Africa yesterday. Here, he met some representatives.
But what is certain is that they have already started a preliminary investigation into this event, as the head of the Investigative Committee informed me this morning. And it will be completed completely and taken all the way to the end. There is no question regarding this.
Let's wait and see what the investigators have to say soon. And right now, technical, genetic, and expert examinations are being conducted. It takes time to do this.
Prigozhin's final moments prior to the deadly plane crash
According to Joe Barnes, Yevgeny Prigozhin was last spotted standing in a desert while carrying an assault rifle and dressed in military fatigues.
The CEO of the Wagner Group made an appearance in a recruitment video on Tuesday in an effort to increase the size of his company's workforce for its covert activities in Africa.
The following day, his private plane took off from Moscow and ascended to a height of 28,000 feet before it vanished from view.
Then, his aircraft, an Embraer Legacy 600, was seen rapidly diving nearly nose-first from the sky and plummeting thousands of feet in a matter of seconds.
